Difference between Carbon black and Petroleum Coke
The difference between carbon black and Petroleum coke or pet coke is the gray-to-black solid carbonaceous residue left by the destructive distillation of petroleum residua.
But carbon black is an amorphous form of carbon that is commercially obtained from the thermal or oxidative decomposition of hydrocarbons and consists of planes of carbon atoms fused randomly to form spherical particles.
However Petcoke is typically used as a fuel source in power plants, it’s the product of carbonization of heavy hydrocarbon cuts of petroleum with high boiling point.
The obvious difference between carbon black and petroleum coke is produced in the process of producing synthetic crude oil from bitumen extracted from the oil sands, it has less ash content .
But carbon black is an inorganic synthetic pigment, created by burning natural gases to form an almost pure carbon.
What is Petcoke?
Petroleum Coke is an extremely stable fuel which means there is little risk of combustion during transportation, but due to its high carbon content when it does combust it releases up to 10% more CO2 per unit of energy than normal coal.
Also, Petroleum coke is the solid residual material left after petroleum refining. As green coke, the carbon content is 80-95%, calcination produces a porous, black solid with a carbon content of 98-99.5%
Due to the extreme thermal conditions in wich petcoke is produced ,and it has a very small amount of combustible volatile matter, as a result, this coke is very difficult to burn due to the low amount of volatile matter.
As well Its along with graphite electrodes is one of the required materials for the steel industry.
